The base figures I used were S.T.A.R. Corps action figures, a knockoff (well, licensed) GIJoe space set sold in blister packs at places like Wal-Mart and K-Mart. The space armor was a good starting point for kitbashing. Additionally, I picked up some cheap friction-motored monster trucks at a Dollar Tree store, with the intent of my creation actually being motorized. Alas, this was not to be. Not only were the motors so shoddy that only one of the three worked, but also the flywheel stuck out beyond the engine, making it difficult to merge with the figure. So I yanked out the motor and made it free-wheeling.
Most of the structural work I did with Milliput epoxy putty, adding the driver's compartment to the chest, building up the helmet, adding the boots and gauntlets, and attaching the wheel unit to the back. This involved a LOT of filing and cutting, especially on the helmet. I glued two extra wheel hubs to the boots, used some plastic rods for the exhaust pipes, attached some googly eyes to the shins for headlights and installed Lego pieces in the boots so that the legs could snap together firmly. As a result, the vehicle mode is pretty stable. The handgun came from the set, and fits snugly between the figure's knees in vehicle mode, or behind the head in robot mode. Like most GIJoe weapons, it looks bad in the figure's hand.
In painting the toy, I had to stick fairly close to the original color scheme of mainly white and silver, so I wouldn't have to worry about paint scraping at the joints. Despite this, there's still some problems at the waist.
One of the last Autobots to be revived using Nucleon, he was among the first volunteers for the experimental new process which would restore his lost transformation ability. Roadgunner didn't care if the final result would look pretty, he just wanted to get back on his wheels...all six of them. The powerful Nucleon reactors in his body allow him to drive at nearly the speed of sound over flat terrain, and his rugged suspension makes him pretty fast over almost any surface. In robot mode he can use the wheels on his feet as a sort of roller skate, to travel at 75mph, although he prefers not to. It reminds him too much of the time he spent stuck in robot mode. As a robot, he can project flames at his opponents from the exhaust ports on his wrists, an attack he can also use on persistent pursuers in vehicle mode. In both modes he has access to an ion pulse rifle with a range of three kilometers. However, he has to be careful using it while driving, as he sometimes catches up to his own shots!
