Dave's Action Figure Rant: "Make A Wish" Razor (Resaurus) Last year about this time, Resaurus created an action figure prototype as part of the wish of Jeff Luttrell, an 11-yr-old dying of leukemia. Now Resaurus has released this figure through Kay Bee, with $5 from every figure going to the Make A Wish Foundation. http://www.resaurus.com has more information on the story behind the Razor figure, which I found at Kay Bee this weekend. CAPSULE Razor: A good solid figure with a nice paint job and pretty nifty accessories. And a BIG wingspan. Ten points of articulation (12 if you count the wings). If the design seems a little "Image-y," keep in mind that this figure was designed by and for an 11 year old, not an adult collector. For such a target audience, it does a good job. Recommended. $9.99 at Kay Bee, $5 of that going to Make A Wish Foundation. RANT Razor stands 6.5" (17cm) tall, with an impressive 15" (37cm) wingspan, and is basically an anthropomorphic bald eagle. His head is that of a bald eagle, with the feather details concealing the seam of his neck joint. He has brown feathers with white accents (and head, of course), blue cargo pants, and various olive drab and gunmetal straps and bands at various points on his body. His beak and feet are golden (some orange highlights on the feet), with black talons and finger-claws. Razor has 10 points of articulation on his body. Swivel head, waist and wrists, standard swivel-type shoulders and hips, and hinged knees. His elbows are not jointed, allowing his beefy arm sculpt to remain uncut. His wings are pegged into his back (snap-in, I'm guessing) and swivel up and down. They don't fold, though, being essentially big slabs of plastic. The wings make him a bit top- and back-heavy, but the long heel talons on his feet help stabilize him against that. I've still had him top over a few times, though, helping demonstrate that this is a very (pauses to pick up off the floor again) durable toy. Unfortunately, the wings are so heavy that they tend to droop if left alone, making it harder to put him in any dynamic poses for display (then again, it'd be a good idea to wire up his wings for support anyway in a display situation). Razor comes with three combat accessories. One is a circular shield bearing his emblem. Cleverly, it attaches with elastic cords rather than a rigid plastic clip, giving it a much more realistic look. Then he has two three-bladed throwing blades that fit comfortably in either hand and can peg onto the backside of the shield, turning the shield into an offensive slashing weapon as well. Unfortunately, the holes are shallower than the pegs are long, leading to a fairly weak grip. Finally, Razor has his sidekick, Gizmo the Fighting Ferret. Gizmo is a 3" (8cm) tall solid piece figure of a ferret with a bomber jacket and red sneakers. It's molded and painted all over, the underside isn't a blank slate covered in copyright notices, and that's a nice touch (and one that seems typical of Resaurus and its "sidekick" figurines). All of this comes in a cardboard box with a flip up front cover concealing a window on the figures (like a Captain Action box, but with the cover flipping up rather than to the side). A rather large number of twist-ties are used to keep everything on the cardboard backing (although less than there could have, thanks to some inventive wrapping). Overall, it's a nice toy. I don't know if I'd have paid $10 for it if not for the Make A Wish connection, but I don't feel like I was burned in the transaction. And the ferret's a nice touch. Dave Van Domelen, contemplating putting Razor over with Garudamon to show off his wingspan, but then again, Gigatron'd just come over and show off HIS 15" span that doesn't droop....
